Gregers Heering is a Danish photographer based in Los Angeles. His Greenland series (2012) premiered as part of a group exhibition in Los Angeles which genrerated substantial interest for his work. Since Greenland, Heering has expanded his Nordic body of work with the two experimental ballet series 'Beneath the Stage' and 'Gravity' featuring the Royal Danish Ballet (2009-2014), a study of the change of the Scandinavian idea of feminism and the ideal female body in 'Elise' and 'The Others' (2013), and finally the sea odyssey Majestic (2015) about 32 days in isolation aboard the biggest ship in the world. Majestic was also published as a book in collaboration with the Danish writer Kirsten Jacobsen (Gyldendal Publishing House 2015).
The series all have their roots in Heering's native Denmark. Together, they offer the viewer a unique voyage and historical take on each of these isolated worlds yet with their own depicted sense of freedom and each with their contrasting masculine and feminine dominances.
Heering’s latest ongoing series 'I Am Here' (2016-) is an obsessive study of dreams, self appearance and diversity among people photographing people in front of the legendary Hollywood sign.
Heering has also recently explored the hidden energies of Yosemite National Park in his series 'Yosemite Souls' (2016) which combines and mirrors analogue negatives and positives, resulting in new, unexpected images of animal faces and rock formations coming to live out of seemingly nowhere.
Heering’s work is characterized by never being staged but rather has its initial foundation in a documentary approach concentrating on just being present. Back in the studio, Heering then works extensively with both digital and analogue experimental printing processes with the one aim of connecting with the very mystery and energy of what lies between, in other words, of what can’t be seen but surely can be felt.
It the obsession behind this one raw emotion which fuels Heering's work.
Heering’s pieces have been exhibited in both group and solo shows around the world and has been featured in numerous publications, including CNN, Der Spiegel, Fabrik, New York Observer and several others. For print inquiries and private showings, please contact the studio (see above).
